Ahoy is a multiplayer sailing game built on realistic water, ship and sailing physics. I am the developer in charge of its main feature — the sailing, ship and buoyancy systems — creating true-to-life ship handling for online multiplayer.

My Role

I lead development of the core sailing simulation: the ship, its buoyancy, and how it moves through the water. The goal is realism that players can feel — every vessel responds to the wind, the sea and the helmsman's input.

Key Features

  • Realistic multiplayer sailing — physically simulated water and ship mechanics
  • Ship heel — the hull leans naturally under the forces acting on it
  • Rudder authority — steering strength varies with the ship's angle and speed
  • Sail trim & lift — sail position and lift are calculated relative to the wind
  • Physics-driven buoyancy — the ship floats, pitches and rolls on the live water surface

The Simulation

Believable sailing comes from the interaction of many systems at once — wind against the sails, water against the hull, and the rudder working with (or against) the ship's momentum. Tuning these so they feel authentic in a live multiplayer setting, while staying performant and synchronised between players, is the heart of the work.
